Coal Miners Memorial
South Sebastian County Historical Society

On Saturday, Oct. 21,2000, about 1000 people gathered in the newly created Miners Memorial Park in Greenwood for the Dedication. The park consists of a statue of a coal miner, an authentic coal car loaded with real coal, two granite walls engraved with names of 3,700 Sebastian County coal miners. The park is located on East Center Street on land donated by First National Bank and the Burgess family.
JoAnn Gordon Bryan,
SSCHS Coal Miners Memorial Committee member

The Memorial Inscription reads as follows:

"This Memorial is dedicated to honor the Coal Miners of South Sebastian County Arkansas. Coal Miners were the heart of our heritage that we enjoy today. These walls of memories include names of the men who mined the coal that fueled the industrial might of America.

"Miners, Mine Bosses, and Mine Owners, together, applied skills, financing, and know-how to an industry that demanded unusual dedication. Many of these men and boys gave their lives in explosions, floods, cave-ins, and accidents. Others were injured or died of black lung disease.

"Many of the Miners were immigrants from Europe. They are a part of the ethnic and cultural mix that enriches our culture today from early 1870 to 1965. Coal Mining and Coal Miners were a dominate force in Sebastian County, Arkansas."

The South Sebastian Historical Society is selling "The Key" magazine which has all* the Coal Miners names listed that are on the wall. For more information, click here.

*The opportunity to add names to the wall has been re-opened. In September, 2001, JoAnn writes, "We added over 90 new names to the coal miners wall facing EAST July 2. We are still taking names with the $40 like you have listed on our site. There is no time limit.

"I am still so proud of the page you made for us and everyonce in a while someone mentions seeing it. Thanks again for doing it."

We are glad we could provide this service, and have added the form back to the page. If you want to add a name to the wall, click here here.
